The Tour's Route: Through Life and History in 2.5 Hours
Act I: The Legacy of Division & The New Centre
We start at the Brandenburg Gate, the site that more than any other stands for division and reunification. Where minefields and barbed wire once tore through the cityscape, we now cruise through relaxed. We explore Potsdamer Platz and make visible how state-of-the-art architecture has healed a vast, death-marked wasteland.
Act II: In the Shadow of the Wall and Watchtower
Past the Spy Museum, we head for a real relic: one of the last three surviving GDR border guard towers. Here, we leave the beaten path. You will feel the oppressive atmosphere of surveillance up close as I explain the insidious system of border security. A place that the „normal“ tourist often overlooks – we take our time. A brief detour to the legendary Hansa Studios (Bowie, Depeche Mode, U2) highlights the history of division as a fascinating part of music history.
Act III: Flashpoint of the Cold War & Fates
We will show and explain the history of the Holzapfel family and their spectacular escape from the roof of the Ministry building, a building with a turbulent history. We will reach the world-famous Checkpoint Charlie. Here, Soviet and American tanks faced each other in 1961 – the world held its breath. But we will also focus on the people behind the politics: at the memorial for Peter Fechter, we will commemorate individual fates. I will tell you about the dramatic escape tunnels and the courage of those who sought freedom.
Act IV: Wall Fates & Kreuzberg Neighbourhood
We follow the course of the Wall deeper into the former border sector between Mitte and Kreuzberg. Here, history comes alive: we cross the invisible scars of the city and see how life worked in the divided city. We learn why the Wall was not just a separation here, but a daily reality for many, before we set course for the river.
Act V: Freedom on the Water & The East Side Gallery
The finale is a celebration of freedom: the East Side Gallery. On 1.3 kilometres, we marvel at the world's longest preserved section of the Wall, now a canvas for artists from around the globe (including the famous „Fraternal Kiss“). The exclusive moment of enjoyment: we stop by the Spree. Enjoy the panoramic view across the water towards the Oberbaum Bridge and Kreuzberg. Here, you can feel the pulse of the new Berlin – a moment of pause and expanse before we return via Alexanderplatz and the „Unter den Linden“ boulevard.
