Route Highlights at a Glance
1. The Heart of Division: Brandenburg Gate & Potsdamer Platz
Our tour starts at Berlin's landmark. Where Pariser Platz gleams today, deadly silence once reigned in the middle of the border strip. We will follow the course of the Wall to Potsdamer Platz. I will tell you how this vast wasteland became Berlin's most modern district after 1989 and where the Wall once precisely cut through it.
2. Watchtower & Cold War: Spies and Border Wall
Cycling past the Spy Museum, we head to one of the last three existing GDR border watchtowers. Here, history becomes tangible: we see a long original section of the Berlin Wall and pass the World Balloon and the Asisi Panorama. A brief stop at the Trabi Museum is, of course, part of the experience before we cross into the „sector“.
3. Focus of world politics: Checkpoint Charlie
We're reaching the most famous Cold War site: Checkpoint Charlie. Here, where diplomats and allies faced each other, we can feel the spirit of the „Cold War“. I'll explain the dramatic events at this border crossing and why this place continues to fascinate people from all over the world to this day.
4. Farewell at the Station: Friedrichstraße & Tränenpalast
Heading down the famous Friedrichstraße, we approach a particularly poignant place: the Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears). As a former border crossing for West Berliners at Friedrichstraße station, it was the scene of tearful farewells between East and West. Here, the human impact of the division becomes truly apparent.
5. Back to the Centre: Reichstag & Hotel Adlon
For the finale, we'll roll past the Reichstag – the parliament building that lay right on the sector boundary. We'll return to Pariser Platz via the legendary Hotel Adlon. A compact, but immense overview of the history that has made Berlin what it is today.
